Girl Riding Bike to Dermatologist in Houston

From shopping for presents to keeping up with family members’ schedules, you rarely have time to think about yourself. Yet, not taking care of your skin will lead to premature aging and additional stress.

Unfortunately, the constant bombardment of new creams, therapies, lasers, peels, and other alternative options make selecting a skin care regimen difficult. So, to make the process simpler, try to follow some of the following points in Skin Care 101.

Cosmeceuticals

Your cosmeceuticals may contain many different ingredients. However, one of the biggest causes of premature aging is exposure to UV radiation, explains the American Academy of Dermatology. Regardless of what type or strength of cosmeceutical you purchase, look for the presence of a sunscreen in the ingredients.

Nutraceuticals

Nutraceuticals are similar to cosmeceuticals; however, nutraceuticals are typically made from organic, natural ingredients. Topical nutraceuticals may include oils from avocados, nuts, and other sources of high nutrition. The key to remembering the difference between nutraceuticals and dietary changes is nutraceuticals are not ingested; they are applied to the skin.

Diet

Diet plays a major role in skin care. An unbalanced diet will lead to poor maintenance of connective, fibrous tissue within your skin. When this tissue and skin cells do not receive proper nutrition, the framework in the skin breaks down. As a result, you may experience premature aging of your skin.

Strive to avoid excess consumption of unhealthy fats, such as Trans-fats, and include Omega-3s, such as fish and krill oil, in your diet. Also, ensure you eat fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. Furthermore, having proper nutrition in your diet will help nutraceuticals and cosmeceuticals improve the appearance and elasticity of your skin.

Exercise

Similar to diet, exercise will improve the appearance and health of your skin. Exercise helps reduce toxins within the body and reduces inflammation. Therefore, your body will be able to naturally reconstruct the framework and connective tissue within your skin, which reduces premature aging.

However, you must ensure you keep your skin clean after exercising. Sweating causes oils and dirt to accumulate on your skin, which clogs pores and contributes to inflammation within the skin. Make sure you properly cleanse your skin, which brings the conversation about skin care to hydration.

Hydration

What does dry skin look like? Aged, sagging, or dirty? Your body needs water to survive, and your skin needs plenty of hydration to stay healthy.

Cleanse your skin regularly and thoroughly. Do not leave cleansers on your skin for longer periods than prescribed.

Cleansing your skin removes dirt, oil, debris, and bacteria and bathes your skin in hydration. Also, keeping your skin hydrated through daily cleansing will encourage skin care products to work properly. Any cleanser used should not strip the skin of nutrients, and “gentle” or “hypoallergenic” cleansers are typically best for sensitive skin.

Maintaining a skin care regimen is essential to ensuring the health and vitality of your skin. Understanding these five principles of skin care will help you keep the youthful qualities of your skin without breaking the bank.
