Treating Vitamin Deficiencies Was What Led to Clear Skin for Jessica

Vitamin deficiencies AcneHey friends – today we’re continuing our series of interviews with people who have cleared their skin naturally and holistically.

We get to find out what worked for them and what didn’t! And today’s is from Love Vitamin reader, Jessica.

These are posted every other week, and if you have cleared your skin naturally and want to fill out your own interview to be featured on The Love Vitamin, then just click here!

What was your experience with acne? How many years did you have it; how did it make you feel?

I had bouts with acne on and off, starting when I was about 13. In high school, it didn’t bother me so much. I figured it was just a phase and I’d grow out of it.

During my freshman year of college, things changed.

I have a very vivid memory of a picture someone took of me. The moment it was developed (yes, it was the era before digital cameras!) and I laid eyes on it, I knew things needed to change.

I felt childish—no college student should look like that. I was practically an adult. Adults don’t have acne.

I felt unattractive. All around me were beautiful co-eds. I suddenly felt like all my other positive attributes were totally irrelevant just because this one issue plagued me.

What kinds of things did you try prior to holistic healing that didn’t work?

I tried just about every prescription medication out there.

The heavy-duty oral pills I took made me fearful. What were they actually doing to my body?!

The topical creams left my skin red, irritated, flaky and almost worse than it was before starting treatment.

Plus, the drugs made me super sensitive to the sun. So, I almost always had splotchy, spotty, random sunburns. And a few of the drugs prohibited me from eating ice cream (dairy products, really). I couldn’t abide by that!

How did you discover that acne could be treated holistically?

Basically, I found out I had some vitamin deficiencies.

Treatment for those deficiencies—which involved vitamin supplementation—actually cleared my skin for the first time in years. The nutrients I had been lacking created a dangerous combination of high stress, lack of sleep and much more.

Once I got my vitamin levels stabilized, clear skin was one of the many positive side effects.

What were the specific things that made the biggest difference to your skin? What worked for you?

The most helpful tools were actually new life choices—a healthy diet, vitamin supplements, less stress, positive thinking, and more sleep.

Were there any obstacles? Things you found difficult about the whole process?

Before I found a treatment that worked (a generally healthy and positive lifestyle), I felt really discouraged.

I had pretty much accepted the fact that acne was something I would be dealing with my entire life. Even if I did find a treatment that worked, it seemed the relief was only temporary.

Later, I realized those temporary fixes were because new and different instigators were constantly being brought my way. For example, changing my pillow case more often worked for a while, but then the acne came back.

Did my pillow case magically become inundated with new acne causing particles? No. The clean pillow case was doing its job, but I had heaped a whole ton of stress onto my life—totally negating the positive effects the pillow case was creating.

Therefore, the biggest hurdle was staying positive and focused. I needed to be vigilant about being healthy—and that included my outlook. Once I let negative feelings creep in, everything got a million times worse.

How did you feel once your skin cleared up?

I feel challenged! I feel like I want this positive outlook to continue. I feel I owe it to myself to stay healthy and happy.
