The Unexpected Makeup Trend for Spring

In the world of color, the shade of blue is often considered to be the redheaded stepchild. But this spring, it’s the golden child, showing up on the eyes in washes of sheer color, strokes of precise eyeliner and strongly pigmented shadows.

From bold hues of royal blue, indigo and navy to more aquatic tones like turquoise, this time around it’s a much more wearable blue that’s being used, and texture is key. “Blue is actually a versatile color, and there’s a shade that accentuates every eye color. Plus, it makes the whites of the eyes look brighter," says Emma Bruzzesi, district manager of Bluemercury. “Textures range from traditional powder eye shadow with soft shimmer to cream shadows, and even pencils.” Our favorites for the season include Milk Makeup Eye Pigment in Sesh ($24), Guerlain The Eye Pencil in Katy Navy ($31) and Charlotte Tilbury Eyes to Mesmerise in Celopatra ($32)

To pull it off, Bruzzesi suggests one of these four looks: Indigo or turquoise on the lower lid close to the lash line to bring out the eye color; lining the outer part of the eyes with a soft neutral color and lining the inner part with blue eyeliner; a sheer wash of color with cream shadow worn lightly; or tightlining the entire eye with deep navy shadow or liner. Just make sure to keep the rest of your makeup clean and soft because the focus, after all, is on the eyes.
