The sun is the number-one cause of skin damage. And, the only way to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays is with sunscreen (and by avoiding the sun at all costs, but that’s not always realistic). We’re told to reapply SPF throughout the day, but truth be told, unless you’re at the beach or lounging by a pool, most of us don’t wear sunscreen the right way.
Thanks to L’Oréal, the way we protect our skin from the sun and the way we wear sunscreen is about to change. The cosmetics giant just launched the My UV Patch, the first-ever skin sensor that monitors just how much UV exposure your skin is getting.

The stretchable sensor, which is said to look similar to a clear bandage, contains special photosensitive dyes that change color based on sun exposure. Users apply the sensor to their skin and then take a photo of the monitor (using a smartphone) and upload it to the coordinating app, which tells the wearer whether it’s time to reapply sunscreen or get out of the sun and head for the shade.
According to the company, unlike other sun monitors, this one is comfortable and thin so people will want to wear it.
Expect for the sensor and app to launch this summer, just in time to save your skin from those summer sunburns.
